The Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program within the Department of Radiologic Sciences offers an advanced imaging program and master's degree to registered or registry-eligible radiologic technologists. It is the nation's only JRCERT-accredited program awarding a master's degree for MRI. The Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) maintains standards that ensure students receive a quality education and training for a future in the imaging field.
The need for skilled MRI technologists continues to grow. For example, an aging baby-boomer population brings more medical conditions, such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease, which require imaging as a tool for making diagnoses. Skilled technologists are needed to take those images. Employment of MRI technologists is projected to grow 14 percent from 2016 to 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. SHRP's MRI program helps fill that skill pool by offering a master of science in magnetic resonance imaging degree.
The Master of Science in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MSMRI) degree program is an opportunity for those who hold bachelor's degrees to expand their education and professional experience by learning and assessing new techniques.
Graduates from SHRP's Magnetic Resonance Imaging master's degree program will be MRI technologists skilled in many areas, including magnet safety, performing imaging procedures, monitoring patient comfort, ensuring quality assurance, and communicating and consulting with radiologists.
Having a master’s degree opens up opportunities for graduates to move into management or supervisory roles, pursue teaching roles, work with imaging companies as applications specialists or in sales, or take on administrative roles in hospitals.
About the program
This is a 12-month, full-time graduate program (3 semesters) offering a professional course of study across 36 semester hours.
Upon successful completion of the MSMRI program, graduates are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) MRI certification examination. Students who pass this examination receive national certification.
